Since the pandemic, haven’t been following award season as I usually do. However, with my new weekly blogging schedule, I dove right back in.
When I saw the photos of the 93rd Academy Awards Pink Carpet, I thought, “What Happened to the Fashion?” π€·π½ Granted there were not as many attendees in person, but I struggled to find many “FASHION MOMENTS”!
BRAD PITT
Happy to see Brad made an appearance for producing the nominated film Minari. In my book π Brad is still sexy & looked amazing in his tuxedo π
The big talk of the awards was Brad being snubbed by the best supporting actress Youn Yuh-jung (see her look below). I didn’t see the moment but I am sure Brad took it in stride and kept looking handsome π€©
ZENDAYA
THIS WAS THE FASHION MOMENT OF THE ENTIRE CARPET!! πZendaya looked stunning in her Valentino Haute Couture gown with Bulgari jewelry. She looked young & fresh with an open midriff. Normally, I wouldn’t like beachy hair with a gown, but on Zendaya it more than works ππ½ Her makeup was dewy and natural, all & all PERFECTIONβ£οΈ
MARGOT ROBBIE
Margot looked pretty & chicππ½ββοΈ in her Chanel Haute Couture gown & Chanel jewelry. However, I didn’t think it was very memorable, just ππ½
Expect more when attending the Oscar’s ππ½
VIOLA DAVIS
Let me first start by saying Viola is wearing my FAVORITE designer, Alexander McQueen, so already she gets a high rating π₯³
Sarah Burton (Alexander McQueen’s head designer) KILLED this gown, it’s a true MASTERPIECE OF FASHION! π£ π£ LIVING for the white laser cut bodice & Viola’s dark skin peeking through is magic π§π½ββοΈ
The Jimmy Choo clutch & jewelry πcompliment her look beautifully.
On the downside the hair is a bit distracting & the the makeup is π. As a makeup artist I would have played up the blush trend instead of putting silver in the crease, but β€οΈ the π.
REGINA KING
Us fashionista’s are screaming MOMENT!! π€©
This Louis Vuitton gown is an artistic dream. The slate column silhouette with crystal vertical stipes (sure they were Swarovski π) are incredible. Of course we are all DYING over the neckline winging into a back cape π¦Έπ½; I AM DECEASED!
Make sure to zoom in to see the crystal Victorian-esque lace hemline ME=β°οΈπ€£
Regina kept the jewels & hair simple, but again not a fan of the makeup π’ Why are makeup artist doing “matchey matchey” with the eyes? π
π½ββοΈ As a makeup artist & fashion stylist, I live by the rule your eyeshadow should compliment not match your outfit. However, the rest of the makeup looks GREATβοΈ
LAURA DERN
Not sure what her stylist was thinking π€ with this black crewneck long-sleeved T-shirt into marabou feather Can-Can skirt vibes π€¦π½ββοΈ
Have seen Laura look better; not even her hair is special.
π¬ Fear she was trying to do youthful, but… swing & a miss ππ½ββοΈ
Her makeup & Pomellato jewelry are nice π
Hoping her shoe π (which you can’t see in this πΈ) were good because maybe it would save this lookβ
HALLE BARRY
Attending as a presenter Halle made sure to give us something to talk about π£ Her beautiful mauve Dolce & Gabbana gown wasn’t π shattering, but I believe the designers were focusing on framing that BANGIN ASS BODY! π
Although, that is not what we are all talking about. We know Halle can pull off ANY hairstyle (and has π) but a pixie bang, short angled bob, who knew? π€·π½ It is BEYOND FIERCE framing her sharp beautiful jawline π
Her only accessories are a few rings π & the look of love on her face! π
REESE WITHERSPOON
The straps on Reese’s Dior gown makes her shoulders a bit more rounded giving an unflattering look π’ Also not a fan of the leather belt coming down in the same location as the ombre.
ππ½ββοΈ Hairstylists NO MATTER WHAT the client says a center part straight down the back should NEVER go to the Oscars. At least make it an interesting curled low style. Otherwise your client just spent a ton of time β° & money π° on something they could have done themselves in 15 minutes π
π½ββοΈ
Makeup too heavy on the eyes with little color on the rest of the face to balance it, is aging her 10 years π΅π½
H.E.R.
Doing research on this look, had to make certain it didn’t have a religious meaning. Why a Peter Dundas cobalt blue sequence jumpsuitβ H.E.R. was paying homage to her idol Prince π€΄π½ who wore a similar look when he won his Oscar. Prince passed away 5οΈβ£ years ago & the tribute brought H.E.R. the luck she needed to bring home her very own Oscar π₯³
Struggled with this look; felt it would have been better suited for a music event πΌ but understand π€ Don’t hate the look just not for the Oscarsπ«
She kept her signature round sunglasses π but hope she will learn how to do it better over her career ππ½ββοΈ
ANGELA BASSETT
This is how the carpet should be done. A SHOW STOPPING Alberta Ferretti red gown, accentuating every incredible curve of the body. Luxury statement Chopard jewels π & sequence clutch π All to compliment, not detract EPIC!! π―
Wish the hair was a chignon but the makeup more than makes up for the nonplus hairdo ππ½
When I said your eyeshadow should support & not match your outfit THIS IS WHAT I MEAN! π Doing a smoky blue eye & balancing it with natural blush (that you can see) & lip is PERFECT!
CAREY MULLIGAN
π£ Carey came to show young Hollywood how to do it! π She looks like the mold for the female Oscar statue in this incredible Valentino Haute Couture gown.
It’s sexy but chic π & makes me think this is something Audrey Hepburn would wear if she were young & alive today ππ½ββοΈ
The hair & makeup are beautifully simple; as they should be. The timelessness βΎ of a chignon to extend the neck is the right way to do effortless π
GLENN CLOSE
Momma always said if you don’t have anything nice to say… π€ͺ
Not a fan of this look & the leather gloves 𧀠are not helping π€·π½ββοΈ The fit is great but wish this were a dress & not a sequence tunic.
The shoe looks like an average lady’s who lunch stiletto π and the Kwiat & Fred Leighton jewelry are the only upsides to the look.
However, I will say Glenn herself looks beautiful π Hair & makeup are stunning.
DANIEL KALUUYA
Daniel’s suit could use a bit of tailoring but appreciate him bringing a modern take on the tuxedo by adding a black T-shirt π & diamond necklace π instead of a bow tie.
Of course, Daniel is wearing the greatest accessory of all, THAT GOLDEN STATUE!
Congratulations on your win! π€©
SACHA BARON COHEN & ISLA FISHER
Both actors look amazing π
Sacha went with a modern take on the tuxedo, with light pants & mocha chocolate π« jacket β€οΈ
Keeping the socks 𧦠& shoes π tonal was genius, now that’s a good stylistβοΈ
Sacha being British understands suit cut. The Brits love their suits very skinny, which I am all the way here for ππ½
Isla looks so pretty & complimented her nominated husband π€²π½ beautifully in her Dior gown and Bulgari jewels π
Would have taken her hair and pinned it back low to expose her neck & that JAW DROPPING necklace π She may have been keeping it loose to give a bit of cover for her already-very-bare neckline.
ANDRA DAY
COMPLETELY WRONG FOR THE OSCARS. Hate to say it because this is Vera Wang, but the dress looks cheap. Like Forever 21, fast fashion cheap π€¦π½ββοΈ Who is her stylist? π€·π½ββοΈ
Andra’s hair is nice but all wrong cheapening the look even more. Not even the classic Casadei shoes π can save this π
Her Tiffany jewelry π & simple makeup are stunningπ€©. Andra’s body is the only good thing going here.
TYLER PERRY
Tyler Perry looks good & made an amazing effort ππ½ Choosing a colored velvet jacket π§₯ with a perfect fit was fantastic.
However, not a big fan of the little bow tie ππ½ββοΈ Also feel if you are doing a velvet shoe π it should match your velvet jacket. Not a complete match but in the same color family π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦
SOPHIA NAHLI ALLISON
Sophia’s Valentino laser cut, long sleeve gown is so fresh & UNDENIABLE 𧨠Normally laser cut wouldn’t “cut it” (see what I did there, lol π€£) on the Oscar carpet, this wouldn’t be appropriate but somehow here it works π
Hair & makeup compliment the over all lookβ£οΈ Even the silver strap on the shoes is perfection π£π£
Sophia was smart keeping the jewelry simple so the gown was the star π
MIA NEAL
Won’t comment on Mia’s hair & makeup because that is her profession π©π½βπ¨ so obvi it’s going to be done nicely (and it was ππ½)
The gown is beautiful & frames her face incredibly. Blue is stunning against her skin, but more importantly it’s cut to conceal that part of a woman’s arms that isn’t always flattering π€«
Wish I could have seen the shoes because the jewelry π was so perfect I believe the shoes would be just as dope π§¨
RITA MORENO
Pay attention Hollywood, THIS IS HOW TIMELESS βοΈ IS DONEβοΈ
Rita is wearing the perfect color for her skin. The gown & sequence jacket flatters all her best features (HELLO COLLARBONES) π
The jewelry is very true to Rita’s style, reminiscent of the late great Frida Khalo π©π½βπ¨
Lastly, Rita’s hair & makeup bring it all together to remind everyone RITA MORENO IS HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY πΈπ½ BITCHES!
MOLLYE ASHER
At first look you would say NOT MEMORABLE π₯± but then you realize her LBG is the perfect backdrop for her jewelry π & accessories
The gold chain belt is modern 80s, but the jewelry is the true heroes of Mollye’s outfit. I mean look at the little gold chain βon her shoes π‘
Mollye kept the hair & makeup simple, which was the right way to go ππ½
TRISH SUMMERVILLE
Trish Summerville did a nice job in her attempts to stand out ππ½ However, the black wrap side of the gown looks a bit wonky at the hip π₯΄
The sequenced check side I LIKE but think the shoulders are a bit off.
Trish put her hair back a bit too severely π¬ in my opinion. Also feel the jewelry is ALL WRONG π«
TRENT REZNOR
When I saw Trent Reznor had to do a double take. Never thought I would live to see THE Trent Reznor wearing Yves Saint Laurent π€
Trent’s early party years π were rough ones, so thought after all this time, he looked good. His bow tie was photographed crooked which I found a bit endearing.
The fact that “Mr. Dark of the 90s” π made an effort to dress appropriately means EVERYONE should show the same level of respect ππ½
CHLOE ZHAO & CHARLENE SWANKIE
Both Chloe and Charlene stayed true to themselves π¦Έπ½ & both looked lovely.
Now I know you are saying, SNEAKERS π ON THE OSCARS CARPET…NOT APPROPRIATE! π¨ Normally I would agree, but paired with a long dress shows Chloe DID respect the event she was attending ππ½
Oh and J’ADORE the braids.
ALAN S. KIM
Alan S. Kim was THE TALK OF THE CARPETβοΈ Just look at the πΈ, need I say more? π, I will.
The Thom Browne shorts suit is fitted to perfection. π that Alan took one of Thom’s designs from the all white S/S 2021 collection, had it died & made it his own! 𧨠Looks modern, fresh & age appropriate.
That precious punim & hair steal the look, overall AMAZING π―
Let’s not forget his mom, who looks great in her navy silk ankle tied pantsuitβ£οΈ
MARLEE MAITLIN
Have seen Marlee do it better; she was once the darling of the red carpet but this look ππ½
Again, would have put Marlee’s hair back or at least styled it better for the gown she was wearing.
Speaking of the gown, the extended sleeves as a train π€¨ I think I get where she was going. She saw something unique amongst the sea of ordinary gowns & thought, this looks special. Unfortunately, she was wrong π€¦π½ββοΈ Dramatic sleeves alone does not make a MOMENT.
EMERALD FENNELL
Emerald debuting her baby bump π€° on the carpet was really sweet.
We’ve seen many actresses rock their bumps, but Emerald looked like a hot train wreck π All the ruffles made it seem like she was hiding & not embracing her new body π‘
Zero effort went into this look, evident by her lack of hairstyle. Looks like she rolled off the couch π, threw on her mom’s floral day dress π & hit the carpet. Even the expression on her face in this πΈ screams NOT CONFIDENT! π€¦π½ββοΈπ¦
TRAVON FREE
Appreciate Travon tried to do something modern & unique on the carpet π
His suit was well tailored & he looks very handsome π
LOVE a brotha that can rock platinum hair & flair like a champβ£οΈ
His date I believe did her best knowing she was going to such a HUGE EVENT π Unfortunately, it feels like a mash up of all of Kim Kardashian’s old red carpet looks. Good try though π
TIARA THOMAS
π Tiara, I see what you were trying to do π€ The look is a modern take on the classic Dior tuxedo.
This look is a bit over the top, but not in a good way, even for me ππ½ββοΈ
Removing the marabou feathers π¦ would have made the entire look more of a FASHION MOMENT.
Tiara’s hair & makeup were super FIERCE & the jewelry was perfect for the look π
YOUN YUN-JUNG & HAN YE-RI
Youn looked like a classic Hollywood actress πΈπ½ Her Marmar Halim gown is another look I could see Audrey Hepburn wearing in her later years π
Youn’s hair could have been done better ππ½ββοΈ but her makeup looked gorg!
Han was a perfect model for the beautiful Louis Vuitton red gown π She kept the jewelry as simple as her hair & makeup. Take note ladies, a chignon is the way to show off a gown π
