The latest Eddie Murphy movie Coming 2 America was released on Amazon Prime March 5, 2021. It has been 33 years since the original Coming to America was released in movie theaters; making the sequel highly anticipated!
Instead of making you read paragraph after paragraph to let you know my opinion, I’m posting it right up front. Was Coming 2 America worth the 30 year wait? Short answer is YES 🥳
As an honest reviewer, I don’t just watch a movie one time and give my opinion 👍🏾 👎🏾 I watch it at least 4 times to capture all the nuances of the film, from cinematography 🎬 to sound effects 🎧
I don’t read other reviews before posting my review & only use IMDb & Wikipedia for research, not to read the reviews.
1988 I remember seeing the original Coming to America in the movie theater 🎥 my freshman year of college. It became a cult classic for a reason, it’s hilarious 🤣🤣
On Saturday March 6th I put my son to bed, grabbed a glass of Prosecco 🍾 & clicked on Amazon Prime. Within the first 15 minutes I was hysterically laughing & dancing in my bed.
Not giving out any spoilers here 🤫 but I will say the story line isn’t the most original or intriguing. However, that was not important to me. I wanted to see how they were going to update the original to 2021.
The way they blended the original to the new was interesting & inventive 💡
Having so many of the original cast in the latest rendition was fantastic for us old heads 👵🏾 (lol); and the new cast did a great job in spite of being surrounded by so many legends of comedy & cinema 🎭
The endless cameos are amazing and as former dancer the African style choreography 💃🏾🕺🏾 by the spectacular Fatima Robinson (Dreamgirls, Ali & tons of notable music videos) is NEXT LEVEL 🤯
Moreover, as a fashion stylist & makeup artist the entire movie for me was peeping the makeup 💄 & costumes 🥻
Everyone knows Eddie Murphy is a GENIUS not just in comedy but in creating characters that require prosthetic makeup to bring to life on screen.
The hair & makeup department on this production was HUGE. Eddie Murphy revived all of his looks from the original film but Arsenio Hall added a new character created for the sequel. I also noted during my research that Leslie Jones had her own hair & makeup team 🤔
The wigs & headpieces 👑 were over the top gorgeous & I will be looking into finding similar items to incorporate into my future looks.
The costume department was also a large staff headed by the incredible Ruth E. Carter. Ruth’s credits are larger than the staff she lead on this production (Black Panther, Selma, The Butler, Amistad, Malcolm X & more). She kept the colors rich & the cuts traditional African.
The only brand I noted throughout the movie was Puma which Ruth E. Carter used for many of the athletic looks.
The bottom line is this is a fantastic feel good movie at a time when we all need one 🤗 I am sure many will disagree. Some may say the story is weak or the plot isn’t strong but WHO CARES! We need a no brainer happy 90 minutes in our lives so grab a drink, laugh 🤭 & enjoy life.
