NY Fashion Week S/S 2021

I have been thinking for over a month the easiest way to present each of the NY Fashion Week S/S 2021 collections. I believe the best way is alphabetical, so here we go!!

  • All videos recorded on my iPad and uploaded on my YouTube channel (click social icon below)
  • Photos of most looks added to the end of each video
  • TRENDS: *Nod to 50s, 70s & 80s *Neon *Rich florals *Protective clothing *Thigh high boots & booties *Chunky jewelry *SEQUINS *Layered ruffles *Laser cut *Lace *Sheer
  • Comment below to let me know which review you liked and what you thought of the S/S 2021 collections

Alice + Olivia

Stacey-Bendet designer

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This short but high impact presentation was exactly what NY is all about. Uptown luxury & downtown street styles were both represented.

With neon being a hot trend for S/S 2021 (see trends above), Alice+Olivia got it just right! The saturated, rich floral prints were delicious & I can’t wait to get my hands on them.

The designer really thought about our new normal by showing face masks and t-shirt slogans that people will want to buy. Every shoe is mind-blowing & the bright Navaho-style print is perfection.

We are really lucky to get a full collection from Stacey. From the skirts & jumpsuits to the ankle-cinched pants & simple t’s; after watching the video you will want it all!

Anna Sui

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Anna Sui took on us on the sweetest picnic EVER! For those that have followed Anna’s career as long as I, knows Anna’s vibe is hippie rocker chic. Decade after decade she modernizes her vibe into looks we all want in our closet.

Anna Sui made a bold choice by showing a softness alongside bold patterns & cuts. Anna also brought back a blast from my past with crochet bucket hats and bags. I recall my parents male friends sporting those hats albeit beer can labels of that time. Anna feminized & brought it into 2021 by using cute citrus labels instead.

Thank you Anna for forcing me to bring my crochet needles out of hiding this winter, gives me something to do during quarantine.

OF COURSE Anna gave us face masks that are incredibly thoughtful. As always she puts her loving heart into every design and makes you an instant fan!

Anne Klein

Jesse Gre Rubinstein + Anne Klein

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Anne Klein’s granddaughter, Jesse Gre Rubinstein, set the scene for the digital presentation. She tells the story of her grandmother, Anne Klein & her importance in fashion history.

Most important in Anne Klein’s story is the 1973 fashion show in Paris with ONLY African American female models; the first designer to ever do it! I already knew that story & thrilled this historic moment in fashion was retold for the younger generation of fashionistas.

Actress/Activist, Ilfenesh Hadera reads a bold poem about women’s strength throughout the presentation. The words are very moving and made me well up with tears hearing about women’s powers!

The S/S 2021 collection is classic chic. The Anne Klein house always gives you must-have staples for every stylish woman’s closet.

Badgley Mischka

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Badgley Mischka is NY LUXURY as everyone knows. Season after season these 2 powerhouse gentleman keep their collection fresh. For S/S 2021 Mark (Badgley) & James (Mischka) brought Paris to NY.

Badgley Mischka does not create every day looks, they create wearable art you buy as a fashion collector & socialite.

On trend were the rich floral prints and sequins. If only I had an event worthy; but alas COVID may have us postponed this spring. However, I may pick up a piece just to have in my collection *wink!

Carolina Herrera

Rating: 5 out of 5.

When I grow up I want to be Carolina Herrera! She has poise and grace which shows up season after season. Has she ever created a bad design? I highly doubt it.

Like all Carolina Herrera collections, S/S 2021 is FIRE! From the structure of the suits to the detail of each accessory, I need it ALL in my closet.

This was the first collection where I saw head to toe sequins & AM LIVING! I told all my friends if they didn’t own a complete sequin item in their closet, they better run out & get some.

Sequin, diamonds & any type of sparkle for daytime is something I have always loved; thrilled it will be everywhere this spring/summer 2021.

Christian Cowan

Christian Cowan

Rating: 3 out of 5.

To be honest, I didn’t know much about this young designer prior to this NY Fashion Week. Once you get past the over-the-top presentation you will note the spectacular tailoring.

It is clear Christian Cowan is a showman with real talent. Dressing some of the biggest stars in music & fashion (Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Naomi Campbell, and Heidi Klum), he clearly has a stylish following. I will be keeping my eye on this young designer to see what he brings us in the future.

Christian Siriano

Christian Siriano
Christian Siriano

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I have been following Christian Siriano’s career since he first appeared on Project Runway (2008). When he said he worked for the late great Alexander McQueen I knew instantly he would win the competition.

Christian Siriano is an artist that labors for his designs and brings a couture hand to his work. The runway show was a beautiful outdoor event.

Although Christian designs for a younger customer and are not appropriate for me, I do appreciate his talent. I will continue to follow his career to see how he evolves with age.

Last season the fabulous model, Coco Rocha closed the show so Christian decided to have her close this collection (proudly showing her baby bump at the end of the catwalk). Bravo, Christian for caring about our future by providing beautiful face masks with each look & making sure we all remember to VOTE!

Cynthia Rowley

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Cynthia Rowley also gave a short, high-energy presentation for spring. Since the American designers had less time to create, many only produced small digital events instead of full runway shows.

Cynthia Rowley’s S/S 2021 collection is how every young stylish NY girl will look come spring. I adored the modern take on the sweatsuit, making it chic enough to wear with heels or sneakers.

Cynthia is carrying over the F/W 2020 70s trend into spring with flared bottom pants, chunky heeled shoes & gold lame! Although it’s not a large collection, it is clearly a thoughtful one.

Imitation of Christ

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Imitation of Christ also opted to do a presentation instead of a runway show. This collection caters to a younger client, so not in my style wheelhouse; however, I always appreciate talent.

Tara Subkoff continues to evolve her label season after season. She always makes sure the IOC woman is on trend while maintaining her individual style.

Jason Wu

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Jason Wu was the collection that kicked off the entire month of fashion (9-14-20)! It was the first video I recorded and got me truly excited for NY Fashion Week.

I was thrilled Jason opted for a traditional runway show which he held on a rooftop in the heart of The Big Apple. Being the first fashion show of “fashion month”, the designer made certain to consider COVID with guests masked & 6 ft. apart.

If I had to choose 1 word to describe Jason Wu‘s S/S 2021 collection it would be EFFORTLESS! Each item has an element of ease making it THE collection every woman will go to if we are still in a semi-quarantine come spring.

During this show, the first, you instantly get what will be trending for Spring 2021 (see list above). Jason gave us a saturated pallet making each garment luxe in it’s comfort. Even the easy cut of the suits were deeply pigmented and paired with rattan + beaded flat sandals.

Libertine

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Once you get past the very short presentation, the photos I collected for the end of the video captures the real beauty of the Libertine S/S 2021 collection.

If you are not a fashion devotee you may not understand the House of Libertine. But if you can breakdown a presentation like us fashion stylists, you will know how to make these items work in your every day life.

For the designer, Johnson Hartig, to bring back previous patterns from the Libertine house was completely brilliant. Remember where you saw these patterns because many of us will be snapping them up come spring. You take any 1 of these pieces and pair it with something in your closet and I promise it will be a MOMENT!

Marchesa

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Marchesa’s S/S 2021 collection is STUNNING! I promise every slide of this short video you will be checking your credit card balance to see how many items you will be getting.

There are not many presentations I took the time to create a video from photos, but for the Marchesa collection I could not resist.

I am so in love with the heavily saturated floral patterns trending for spring; Marchesa showed them in a way that still made them soft. I really can’t say more except LOVE!

Michael Kors

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Could I have posted my reviews sooner, like other bloggers? Yes, but there is only 1 designer I love more than my beloved Alexander McQueen and that is Michael Kors! My reviews would not have been complete without the Michael Kors S/S 2021 collection (showed 10-15-20).

MK created a beautiful movie about the “making of” & inspirations for spring before his outstanding runway presentation. Those that follow Michael Kors knows he is the ultimate New Yorker and always incorporates elements of NY in EVERY design.

Every S/S MK gives us sexy Hamptons. He always delivers chic basic staples modernized so you covet them year after year. After the show I went to the Michael Kors website & spent an obscene amount of money; that’s the power of Michael Kors!

Rebecca Minkoff

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Rebecca Minkoff’s S/S 2021 collection is very cool and downtown NY chic. Rebecca is a designer that completely understands her customer & creates pieces that are young and fresh season after season.

Tons of designers followed the rich florals trend, but very few NY designers did animal print (let alone head-to-toe animal print)! Rebecca Minkoff’s presentation gives me woman empowerment vibes and can now envision what our new “girls night out” will look like post COVID.

Tadashi Shoji

Tadashi Shoji
Tadashi Shoji

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Tadashi Shoji really delivered this season. He took my love of the deep rich floral trend & amplified it by a million. The Tadashi Shoji S/S 2021 collection solidified this trend is going to work for many styles & ages.

Tadashi gave us classic femininity with modern textiles & cuts. You may feel he designs for a more mature client but trust me his pieces will appeal to all!

The 80s trend is represented but unfortunately the collection does not give many separates to mix and match with other pieces in your closet.

Tiffany Brown

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

The moment I saw the Tiffany Brown Ltd. runway show I knew exactly what I wanted to write: Carrie Bradshaw Sex in the City; from the flower accents to the fierce strut of each model.

Tiffany’s color palate made me think of Laura Ashley from the 80s (pink & green) and believe it’s the reason she choose these colors. Unlike Laura Ashley, Tiffany delivers the colors boldly updating it for spring 2021.

The Tiffany Brown Ltd. brand lovingly designs for EVERY size & is one of the few African American designers prominently featured at NYFW!!

Ulla Johnson

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Ulla Johnson’s S/S 2021 collection is WOW!! Every single piece I want to rock this spring.

Ulla gave such a great range of separates that I had to get on her mailing list so I can be online the day the collection goes on sale.

I ABSOLUTELY NEED EVERY knitwear piece, EVERY denim look & EVERY accessory/jewelry piece! Each spring/summer trend is represented but it doesn’t feel contrived. When you think of sexy confident women, think Ulla Johnson‘s S/S 2021 collection; IT’S LIFE!
